A Catastrophic Error

Folks,

I come to you today with hat in hand, begging your forgiveness. In my excitement to tabulate the final pool results, I completely forgot the bonus section - select the Conn Smythe winner for an extra 10 points. (In my defence, this is the first year we've done that.)

There were two poolies to select Evgeni Malkin as their Conn Smythe winner. One of them is Philip Ling. Congratulations.

The other is Geoff Hastings, the man who heretofore was just four points behind Jeff Madill for first place. With the 10-point bump, Geoff has taken Jeff and the $420.

To Jeff Madill: my sincere apologies.

To Geoff Hastings: way to go!

The updated standings read as follows:

Final Player Update - Jeff Madill is your winner!

Congratulations are in order to Jeff Madill, this year's Sons of Manitoba Playoff Hockey Pool Player Side Champion!

Mr. Madill's deft selections focusing on Detroit and Pittsburgh players took him to victory, and a payoff of $420!

Well done is also in order for Geoff Hastings, who matched Madill closely, but for a single pick, Johan Franzen.

Thanks so much to everyone for entering. I haven't discussed this with Pete, but since my involvement began a few years ago, this has probably been the best SOM pool ever. The prize portion certainly added a great deal of interest, and it's something we'll likely reprise next time around.

See you all next year!

Pens win! So does Rob!

Good evening poolies and congratulations to Rob Kovac, the 2009 Sons of Manitoba Team Side champion. Rob will take home $420 as the first cash prize winner for the pool as a whole since 1999. The player side winner will be announced soon.

Rob won by being one of eight poolies to correctly predict a Pittsburgh triumph, which the Penguins did with a 2-1 win in Game 7 over Detroit on Friday night. Geoff Hastings, Natalie James, Yours Truly, Keith Bonnell (who, by the way, hesitated from entering because he was afraid of posting an embarrassing score), James Gordon, Mike Macaraeg and Don McGowan were also correct, but all get $0 for their effort.

Jeff Madill, who would have won the $420 if the Wings had been able to close out the Penguins in either Game 6 or 7, will now have to await his fate on the player side, where at last report he was leading.

Below are the final standings, but first a big thanks to everyone who entered this year. It was nice to see such a robust turnout for the pool again. James and I appreciate any feedback (both positive or negative) or suggestions you have for next year.

Have a great off-season everyone!

Long-Awaited, Much-Anticipated Player Side Update

You blink your eyes, and before you know it, it's the Stanley Cup final.

Well, the moment our parents' refused to name us Jeff/Geoff, we were out of this race. And in fact, it's all but over as it is.

Upon close scientific examination, the only difference between the squads of Jeff Madill and Geoff Hastings is the presence of Johan Franzen on the team of the former. That means this is pretty much decided already. Good on both of the Jeffs/Geoffs for having terrific rookie years.

Oh, also, I'd like to welcome Dave Washburn to the realm of the FROZEN!
