2010 rules/entry details
It took until the last day of the season to determine the playoff matchups, but everything is set for the NHL post-season and the Sons of Manitoba pool is ready to go for another exciting year.
As I mentioned in my preview e-mail Peter James will be running the show this year while James Peters is on administrative leave (and for all of those who were wondering, it is UNPAID administrative leave!) My brother, and former champion Mike James, has agreed to help with some of the scoring.
The biggest change for the 19th edition of the pool is how the prize money is disbursed. Like last year the entry fee is $20, which gets you in to both sides of the pool. Again like last year only the winner of each side gets a prize. However the breakdown is slightly different. This year 1/3 will go to the winner of the player side, 1/3 to the winner of the team side and 1/3 to Right to Play, an international charity which promotes sports in the developing world. Based on last year's entry, that would be $280 for each winner and $280 for charity.
Like last year the entry fee is optional for those who don't want to plunk down the $20 (but if you don't pay, you're ineligible for a prize). However, I'd strongly encourage everyone to take part to make the charity component as successful as possible.
The format of the pool this year is unchanged. For Part A, fill out a playoff bracket. Below you will see the first-round matchups, but remember in the second round the highest remaining seed always plays the lowest remaining seed in each conference, so please format your picks properly. Also, after each series select the number of games you think it will go (4, 5, 6 or 7).
Correct picks in the first round are worth three points, second round five points, third round seven points and final round 12 points. If you get the team and number of games correct you get one bonus point.
EASTERN CONFERENCE
(1) Washington vs. (8) Montreal
(2) New Jersery vs. (7) Philadelphia
(3) Buffalo vs. (6) Boston
(4) Pittsburgh vs. (5) Ottawa
WESTERN CONFERENCE
(1) San Jose vs. (8) Colorado
(2) Chicago vs. (7) Nashville
(3) Vancouver vs. (6) Los Angeles
(4) Phoenix vs. (5) Detroit
Part B is the player side. Select 10 fowards, four defencemen and three goalies from playoff teams. For skaters one point is awarded for a goal, one for an assist and two bonus points for an overtime goal. For goaltenders, one point is awarded for a win and two additional points are awarded for a shutout. Finally, as a new tweak this year, please select the player you think will win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Ten bonus points will be awarded to anyone who picks the eventual winner (the Conn Smythe winner can be among the 17 players on your original list, but there is no requirement that it must be).
Finally, the deadline to get your picks in is Thursday April 15 at 5 p.m. ET. Please submit them to sonsofmanitoba@gmail.com
To pay the money:
For those of you in Kamloops, you can pay in person to James Peters (we are allowing him to handle money this year, just not spreadsheets) or if you're in Ottawa you can give it directly to Peter James.
Otherwise e-mail money transactions, PayPal (peter.james@gmail.com) and cheques will all be accepted. If you're mailing a cheque, please send it to:
Apt C-10
200 Pretoria Ave.
Ottawa ON K1S 1X2
Also when you're e-mailing or handing in your picks, please indicate if you intend on paying so we know where to send the collection agency.
Finally, don't forget to check out the Sons of Manitoba blog, which will be used for pool updates throughout the playoffs. It's located at sonsofmanitoba.blogspot.com. Also, we're on Twitter at twitter.com/sonsofmanitoba AND we have a Facebook group (search for us and you'll find it).
